Gutters Prevent Erosion

Roofs are usually thousands of square feet. In heavy rain, a high volume of water coming off the roof directly to the ground can erode the dirt around your home. That can lead to muddy soil and damaged grass.

Keep Basements Dry

The most important reason for gutters is to funnel water away from your basement walls. Water that falls from a roof can saturate the ground near the foundation. Eventually water can make its way down and through the foundation walls due to hydrostatic pressure. That is when you can see cracks in your basement and even flooding. Water coming off of the roof with nowhere to go can end up in basement wall and result in a buckled foundation.
